The Government of Canada announced trade retaliations against the United States following the imposition of 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum.
Starting Thursday, Canada will apply a 25% tariff on US products valued at 29.8 billion Canadian dollars.
The Ministers of Finance, Foreign Affairs, and Industry reported on the measures during a press conference.
The future Prime Minister, Mark Carney, expressed his intention to dialogue with Trump to reduce trade tensions.
Canada Responds with More Tariffs to the US
The United States initiated the application of these tariffs globally, affecting Canadian products outside of the USMCA treaty.
Canada will levy 12.6 billion Canadian dollars on steel imports from the United States.
Additionally, it will impose tariffs on 14.2 billion Canadian dollars in products such as tools, computers, and sports equipment.
Since March, Canada had already implemented tariffs on US imports worth 30 billion Canadian dollars.
In total, Canada is applying a 25% tariff on US imports valued at nearly 60 billion Canadian dollars.
Minister LeBlanc warned that the Canadian government might impose more tariffs in response to Trump.
Canada considers these US measures «absolutely unjustified» and will continue to press for their removal.
The Foreign Minister, Mélanie Joly, stated that this will be a «daily fight» to defend the Canadian economy.
During the G7 summit in Charlevoix, Joly plans to discuss the issue with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
