  • Profe Claudio Nieto talks to you about autoimmune diseases.
  • The immune system might not be as simple as we think.
  • Sometimes, in fact, it might attack the body and we don’t know why.

When we think of our immune system, we usually associate it with the idea of strength and protection.

Isn’t that so? After all, what could be better than having a system that defends us tooth and nail against any external threat?

But as often happens in the complex machinery of the human body, balance is key. And when this balance is disrupted, serious problems can arise.

Imagine for a moment that your immune system is not strong enough to fight infections. You become vulnerable, exposed to constant danger.

Immunodeficiency

This situation, known as immunodeficiency, can leave your body unprotected, allowing diseases to spread unchecked.

But here’s the surprise: threats don’t just come from the outside; they can also arise from our own bodies.

Cancer cells are a clear example of this. If your immune system isn’t robust enough to stop their proliferation, they can grow uncontrollably, forming tumors and putting your health at risk.

That’s why maintaining a strong and active immune system is crucial for preventing serious diseases like cancer.

The immune system gets confused

But what if your immune system is too aggressive? This is where autoimmune diseases come into play.

In these conditions, the immune system becomes overactive, attacking not only external invaders but also the tissues and organs of the body itself.

It’s as if our defenses turn against us, triggering a series of chronic and debilitating diseases.

The list of autoimmune diseases is long and varied, including conditions like type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, and multiple sclerosis, among many others.

It’s more likely for women to suffer from these conditions

In these diseases, the immune system confuses healthy cells with harmful agents and attacks them, causing inflammation, pain, and dysfunction of the affected organs.

And here’s another surprising fact: did you know that 80% of all autoimmune diseases develop in women?

It seems that the female immune system, while generally stronger overall, also has a greater propensity to deviate and attack the body itself.

This gender disparity leads us to reflect on the complexities of the immune system and its relationship with hormonal and genetic factors. But the complications of the immune system don’t stop there.

Tools to strengthen it

Allergies are another example of how our defense system can become too aggressive, reacting excessively to harmless substances like pollen or food.

Instead of protecting us, these allergic responses can cause severe symptoms and even endanger our lives. So, what can we do to maintain a healthy balance in our immune system?

The answer may lie in adopting a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management.

Additionally, it’s important to avoid factors that can trigger exaggerated immune responses, such as smoking, obesity, and chronic stress.

In summary, our immune system is a powerful defense weapon, but it can also become a double-edged sword if it’s not kept in balance.

That’s why it’s essential to take care of our health and be aware of how our actions can affect the function of our immune system.

After all, the key is to find the right balance between defense and self-control.
