April not only marks the end of tax season in the United States—it is also a key opportunity to claim tax refund checks and financial assistance that can amount to hundreds or even thousands of dollars for many families.

From tax credits to state programs, there are still benefits available that not everyone has claimed.

  • Why it matters: These payments can help cover basic expenses such as rent, food, or debt, especially amid a high cost of living.

4 April Tax Refund Checks:

1. California offers up to $3,756 with CalEITC
One of the most important programs is the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), part of the April tax refund checks opportunities.

This benefit is aimed at low-income workers and can provide up to $3,756, depending on income level and household size.

To qualify, you must have earned between $1 and $32,900 during the tax year, have a valid SSN or ITIN, and have lived in California for more than half the year.

Additionally, those who qualify may access extra benefits, such as the Young Child Tax Credit, which can add up to $1,189 if there are children under six in the household.

2. Pennsylvania continues offering up to $1,000 in 2026

In Pennsylvania, the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program remains active.

Applications are open until June 30, 2026, and payments range from $380 to $1,000 depending on income.

The program is aimed at:

  • Individuals aged 65 or older
  • Widows or widowers aged 50 or older
  • People with disabilities aged 18 or older

There are also supplemental payments ranging from $190 to $500 for those with greater financial need, especially in cities like Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Scranton.

3. Washington provides refunds of up to $1,330 per family

The state of Washington offers the Working Families Tax Credit, another key component of the April tax refund checks.

Refunds range from $335 to $1,330, depending on income and the number of children in the household.

To qualify, you must have lived in the state for at least 183 days, have a valid SSN or ITIN, and have filed a federal tax return.

This program works similarly to the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, adjusting amounts based on income levels.

4. New York increases the child tax credit this year

New York is also expanding its financial support with changes to the child tax credit.

  • For the 2025 tax year, the maximum amount for children under four increases from $330 to $1,000 per child.
  • Additionally, for children aged four to sixteen, the credit will increase to up to $500 per child in the 2026 tax year.

To receive this benefit, it is necessary to file the appropriate tax return—preferably electronically to speed up the process—making it an important part of the April tax refund checks.

What’s Next: April is key to claiming these benefits

Although some programs have later deadlines, April remains a crucial month to begin the process of securing these benefits.

  • Filing your tax return is the main step to access most of these benefits.
  • Additionally, tools such as CalFile or free assistance programs can help reduce errors and speed up refunds.

For many families, these payments represent a real opportunity to improve their financial situation in the short term.
