The Director of National Intelligence of the United States, Tulsi Gabbard, announced that she will leave her position at the end of June 2026.
The decision comes after the medical diagnosis of her husband, Abraham, who is facing a rare form of bone cancer.
Gabbard confirmed her departure through a post on X, where she explained the personal reasons behind her resignation.
“Unfortunately, I must submit my resignation, effective June 30, 2026,” Tulsi Gabbard wrote.

The official explained that her husband was recently diagnosed with “an extremely rare form of bone cancer.”
According to the letter shared on social media, Gabbard informed President Donald Trump directly about her decision.
She also thanked him for the trust she received during her leadership of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
“I am deeply grateful for the trust he placed in me,” she expressed.
Gabbard stated that leading the office during the last year and a half was a meaningful experience.
The former official described Abraham as her “unwavering support” throughout more than a decade of marriage.
She also mentioned the military deployments overseas and political campaigns they shared together.
“I cannot, in good conscience, ask him to face this fight alone,” Gabbard wrote.
The director maintained that the position requires a level of commitment and time incompatible with her family’s current situation.

Donald Trump also reacted publicly after the resignation of the Director of National Intelligence became known.
The president confirmed that Gabbard’s final official day will be June 30, 2026.
He also announced that Aaron Lukas will assume the position on an interim basis.
Lukas currently serves as principal deputy director of national intelligence.

Trump expressed support for Gabbard and her family during this personal moment.
“Her wonderful husband, Abraham, was recently diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer,” the president wrote.
The president said the official wants to accompany her husband during treatment.
He also assured that they will face “this tough illness” together.
“I have no doubt that he will soon be better than ever,” Trump added.
The president praised Gabbard’s performance during her time in the administration.
“Tulsi has done an incredible job and we will miss her,” he said.

Tulsi Gabbard is a U.S. Army Reserve officer and political commentator.
She also served as a representative for the state of Hawaii in the U.S. Congress.
She held that position from 2013 to 2021.
During her time in Congress, she became the first Samoan-American member of the United States Congress.
Gabbard has maintained a presence in both politics and military and national security matters.
Her appointment as Director of National Intelligence placed her at the head of one of the most sensitive offices in the federal government.
The resignation marks the end of her time in the Trump administration.
So far, no details have been announced regarding a possible permanent replacement.
