Mexico is on alert due to the rapid development of Tropical Storm Erick, which formed off the Pacific coast and could intensify into a Category 2 hurricane in the coming hours.

Federal authorities have issued preventive advisories, especially for the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero, where the phenomenon is expected to hit hardest.

Laura Velázquez, head of Civil Protection, reported on Tuesday that Erick formed from Tropical Depression Five-E, which developed south of Chiapas and Oaxaca.

«Last night at 9 PM, Tropical Depression Five-E formed. This happened south of Chiapas and Oaxaca, and by 3 AM today, it intensified into a storm named Erick,» she said, according to EFE.

Areas Under Hurricane and Storm Watch

The official explained that the cyclone is currently located about 335 kilometers (208 miles) southwest of Puerto Chiapas and continues to move northwest.

During the government’s morning press conference, Velázquez warned that Erick could make landfall as a Category 2 hurricane on the border between Oaxaca and Guerrero.

For this reason, a hurricane watch remains active from the bays of Huatulco, Oaxaca, to Punta Maldonado, Guerrero, according to Infobae.

There is also a tropical storm watch from Salina Cruz to Huatulco, meaning intense rainfall, strong winds, and possible landslides are expected.

Oaxaca Could Be the Most Affected State

«It is very important to note that this estimate may change depending on the final trajectory and intensity of the impact,» the Civil Protection chief warned.

According to government projections, up to 22 municipalities in Oaxaca could be directly affected by the rains and gusts accompanying the cyclone.

Authorities have begun coordinating with local and state governments to prepare temporary shelters and activate evacuation protocols if necessary.

Velázquez urged citizens to pay attention to official announcements distributed through social media and news outlets.

Intense Hurricane Season in the Pacific and Atlantic

«Through social media, the locations of temporary shelters will be communicated to the public, as well as any need for evacuation,» she explained.

The alert over Erick comes amid an especially active hurricane season in Mexico, with forecasts predicting up to 37 named storms.

Of those systems, between 16 and 20 are expected to form in the Pacific and 13 to 17 in the Atlantic, keeping Civil Protection on constant alert.

So far, three cyclones have hit the country from the Atlantic in 2024: Storm Alberto in June, and Beryl and Chris in July.

Recent Impact of Hurricane John Still Felt

Storm Alberto, in particular, caused six deaths in the state of Nuevo León, exposing the risks of intense rainfall in urban areas.

In the Pacific, Hurricane John marked the most recent disaster, making landfall on September 23 as a Category 3 hurricane.

This event caused 29 fatalities in Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Michoacán, as well as severe damage to infrastructure, roads, and basic services.

In light of these past events, the federal government has reinforced its prevention and communication strategy for extreme weather events.

Authorities are urging the public not to become complacent and to stay informed about the evolution of tropical storm Erick in the coming hours.

«We ask the public to stay very alert on social media and in the news to follow Erick’s trajectory and the magnitude of its impact,» Velázquez emphasized.

As the country monitors the behavior of this new cyclone, the experience of past hurricanes underscores the importance of acting with responsibility and preparedness, reported EFE and Infobae.
