A 17-year-old teenager was arrested for the murder of a man near Times Square in New York allegedly linked to a TikTok challenge.

Authorities are linking the crime to an alleged viral challenge spread on social media.

The incident took place Monday night and has generated widespread attention because of the account reportedly given by the suspect to police.

The homicide occurred in one of Manhattan’s busiest areas, and authorities are investigating the possible connection between street violence and viral online content.

Police are also continuing their search for two other young people allegedly involved in the attack.

Teenager charged with murder

According to EFE, New York authorities announced Thursday the arrest of the 17-year-old suspect.

The teenager was detained Wednesday in Brooklyn.

According to local outlets such as New York Daily News and CBS News, the teenager is accused of fatally stabbing Leónidas Baez, 39.

The attack occurred shortly before midnight on a street near Times Square.

Police stated that the suspect was carrying a scalpel at the time of his arrest.

According to the New York Daily News and CBS, the teenager allegedly told police he was participating in a viral TikTok challenge.

The supposed challenge reportedly involved “harassing crack addicts.”

Based on the suspect’s statement to investigators, the teenager and his companions selected the victim at random.

Reports indicate that Leónidas Baez was apparently sleeping on the street when the attack occurred.

Authorities have not officially confirmed additional details about the alleged viral challenge mentioned by the suspect.

However, the statement has drawn attention because of the possible connection between social media and violent acts.

Gothamist reported that police obtained surveillance footage connected to the case.

The video reportedly shows Baez arguing with three individuals before the attack.

However, the stabbing itself does not appear in the footage obtained by investigators.

Police continue investigating to fully determine what happened.

Leónidas Baez was visiting New York

Leónidas Baez was 39 years old and lived in the state of Massachusetts.

His family told the Daily News that he enjoyed traveling.

They also stated that he was visiting New York at the time of the attack.

The crime occurred near Times Square, one of the city’s most visited tourist destinations.

Baez’s death has raised concern over violence occurring in public spaces across Manhattan.

Authorities continue collecting evidence and attempting to locate the other two suspects.

So far, no additional details have been released regarding the relationship between those involved.

The case remains under investigation as police work to determine exactly how the attack unfolded.
