- The Mexican President Made Statements.
- Here are the details.
In an unexpected move, the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, today revealed the contents of a letter addressed to his American counterpart, Joe Biden.
The letter, sent last Friday, focuses on the funding of Mexican civil organizations by the U.S. government, an action López Obrador describes as offensive and contrary to the principle of non-intervention.
During his morning press conference, AMLO expressed his concern about the financial support that, according to him, the organization Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI) has received from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The amount mentioned by the Mexican President corresponds to 111 million pesos ($5.91 million) between 2018 and 2023, a sum that, although he considers relatively minor, he finds deeply inappropriate.

«This behavior is completely offensive and contrary to the relations of respect for our sovereignties that both you and I have cultivated for the benefit of our nations,» stated López Obrador.
He also highlighted that the U.S. intervention violates the Mexican constitutional principle of self-determination and non-intervention.
The Mexican President reminded that the interventionist attitude is a constant concern, as MCCI is critical of his administration and various corruption cases are denounced.
The Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) of Mexico recently revealed that MCCI has received a total of just over 502.58 million pesos ($26.7 million) since 2016, with a significant portion coming from the United States.
López Obrador concluded with a conciliatory tone
In response to the UIF’s revelation, USAID admitted to having funded MCCI with more than six million dollars in 2023.
This funding has been viewed by López Obrador as a challenge to Mexican sovereignty and a violation of mutual respect between the two countries.
In his letter, the Mexican President ended on a conciliatory note, stating that despite valuing the personal relationship between both leaders, the issues of freedom and independence of the peoples are of utmost importance.
«Forgive me for addressing this matter directly, believe me, I respect you and would not want to bother you in any way, but as you will understand, issues related to the freedom and independence of peoples go beyond personal feelings,» concluded López Obrador.
