Degezeta Killed in Culiacán: The Young Urban Singer Was 22 Years Old

The urban music scene in northern Mexico is in mourning following the murder of Mario Alberto Barreto Domínguez, artistically known as Degezeta, in Culiacán, Sinaloa.

The singer, only 22 years old, was attacked on the night of May 20 when, according to initial reports, he was leaving a recording studio.

The crime took place in front of Ángel Flores Stadium, in a busy area of the city, which has caused shock among followers and residents.

Local media reported that the young artist was traveling with Iván Marlon, who also lost his life during the armed attack.

Direct attack in the middle of a public street

According to information released by media outlets such as Radio Fórmula and Azteca Noticias, the attack occurred when the vehicle they were traveling in stopped at a red traffic light.

Armed individuals allegedly took advantage of that moment to open fire on the car, in what is preliminarily being described as a targeted attack.

State authorities confirmed that an investigation file has been opened to clarify what happened and locate those responsible of Degezeta’s murder.

The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Sinaloa is working on gathering evidence and testimonies to reconstruct the events.

Identification and transfer of the remains

Hours after the attack, the singer’s relatives arrived to carry out the process of identifying the body before the corresponding authorities.

It was reported that Degezeta’s remains would be transferred to Hermosillo, Sonora, where his family hopes to say goodbye in private.

So far, the family has not issued a public statement regarding what happened nor offered official comments.

The case adds to a series of violent incidents that have impacted young figures in the music industry in different regions of the country.

Degezeta: A rising career cut short

Degezeta was considered one of the emerging voices within the urban genre, with a growing fan base across digital platforms.

Just five days before his death, the artist had released the song “Glopeta,” a production that marked a new stage in his career.

Hours before the attack, he shared an image from a recording studio on his Instagram stories, indicating he was working on new music.

The post, which now carries a different meaning for his followers, was one of his final public signs before the tragic outcome that abruptly silenced his voice, according to Univisión.
